Workplace reading skills are essential for success on the job. Reading to perform a task is required not just for job performance, but for worker safety. This course teaches you effective ways to capture the most important information within a text. You'll begin with an assessment that gauges your current ability to respond to questions about a technical passage. Then, you'll dive into best practices such as the SQ3R reading strategy, how to identify key components within a text, and how to effectively draw conclusions. You also will discover ways to connect to the text so as to establish deeper meaning, and eventually, how to apply the reading methods to working with math.

Many skills are required to successfully complete a construction apprenticeship program and be able to function as a competent Journey-level worker. One such skill is the ability to apply standard mathematics in the classroom as well as on the job. The Tech Math course provides a review of necessary mathematical skills which are crucial to anyone working in a building trade. Topics include operations with whole numbers, integers, fractions, decimals, ratios, exponents, and units and measurements.
